Wide-baseline stereo vision for Mars rovers
نویسندگان
چکیده
In order to perform localization and navigation over significant distances (up to a few kilometers), it is important to be able to accurately map the terrain to be traversed. Local methods, such as conventional stereo, do not scale well to large distances and prevent longrange planning. In this paper, we discuss wide-baseline stereo techniques for rovers. In wide-baseline stereo, the image pair is captured with the same camera, but at different positions of the rover. While the larger baseline allows improved accuracy for more distant terrain, stereo matching is more difficult for two reasons. First, odometry errors result in uncertain knowledge of the relative positions of the cameras when the images are captured. Second, the change in perspective makes stereo matching difficult, since image landmarks no longer have the same appearance in both images. We address these problems and show test results on real images.

NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover (MER) missions will land twin rovers on the surface of Mars in 2004. These rovers will have the ability to navigate safely through unknown and potentially hazardous terrain, using autonomous passive stereo vision to detect potential terrain hazards before driving into them. Unfortunately, the computational power of currently available radiation hardened processors ...
متن کاملEpipolar Image Generation and Corresponding Point Matching from Coaxial Vehicle-based Images
The matching of corresponding points is the foundation of image-based 3D reconstruction. As coaxial vehicle-based images as concerned, however, since they are taken along the optical axis epipolar lines of coaxial stereo pair are arranged in the direction of radial in stead of nearly horizontal arrangement of stereo pair with horizontal baseline. Therefore, the generation of epipolar images and...

In January, 2004, the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission landed two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, on the surface of Mars. Several autonomous navigation capabilities were employed in space for the first time in this mission. In the Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) phase, both landers used a vision system called the Descent Image Motion Estimation System (DIMES) to estimate horizontal veloci...

In January 2004, NASA’s twin Mars Exploration Rovers (MERs), Spirit and Opportunity, began searching the surface of Mars for evidence of past water activity. In order to localize and approach scientifically interesting targets, the rovers employ an on-board navigation system. Given the latency in sending commands from Earth to the Martian rovers (and in receiving return data), a high level of n...

Introduction The Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) has been operating on board of the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft since 1998. It consists of three cameras Red and Blue Wide Angle cameras (FOV=140 deg.) and Narrow Angle camera (FOV=0.44 deg.). The Wide Angle camera allows surface resolution down to 230 m/pixel and the Narrow Angle camera down to 1.5 m/pixel. This work is a continuation of the ...
